Headlight Yellowing Vs Led Degradation: What's Really Happening
Your headlights look dimmer than they used to. Is it the lens, or is it the bulb? Most drivers assume it is the same problem. It is not. These are two separate issues with two separate causes, and knowing the difference saves you from fixing the wrong thing.
Problem one: the plastic lens turning yellow
The clear cover over your headlight is made of a hard plastic called polycarbonate. Over time, sunlight breaks that plastic down. This is called UV damage, and it works the same way sunlight fades a plastic chair left outside for years.
As the plastic breaks down, it turns cloudy, then yellow. Heat, road grime, and weather all speed this up. This yellowing has nothing to do with what kind of bulb sits behind it. A brand new LED bulb inside a yellowed lens still loses brightness, because the light has to pass through a cloudy, discolored cover to reach the road.
Problem two: the LED chip losing brightness
LED bulbs do not usually burn out like an old halogen bulb does. Instead, they slowly get dimmer over years. This is called lumen depreciation, and heat is the main cause.
Every LED chip produces some heat while it runs. If that heat is not carried away properly, it builds up around the chip and slowly wears it down from the inside. A well-built LED with a strong heatsink stays cooler and keeps its brightness far longer. A poorly built one runs hotter and fades faster, sometimes within a year.
Why people mix these two up
Both problems show up the same way: your headlights seem dimmer at night. But the fix is completely different for each one.
- If your lens looks cloudy or yellow from the outside, the problem is the plastic cover, not the bulb.
- If the lens looks clear but the light still feels weaker than before, the LED chip itself is likely fading.
Polishing a yellowed lens does nothing for a fading chip. And replacing a bulb does nothing for a yellowed lens. Fixing the wrong one wastes money and leaves the real problem untouched.
Why this matters for your next LED upgrade
A quality LED with a strong heatsink is built to resist chip fading for years. But no LED bulb can fix a yellowed lens sitting in front of it. The two problems are unrelated, and a good headlight upgrade only solves one of them.
