Street Legal vs. Non-Street Legal Headlights: Road Safety Measures in the Philippines

When upgrading your vehicle’s lighting, it’s essential to make sure your headlights meet local regulations. Republic Act No. 4136 sets the standards that all motor vehicles must follow, and understanding these rules is a key part of proper road safety measures in the Philippines.

As per RA 4136, every motor vehicle that exceeds one meter in width is required to be equipped with two headlights—one on either side—producing white or yellowish light. 

These lights should be activated no later than thirty minutes post-sunset and stay illuminated until at least thirty minutes prior to sunrise, or as weather conditions require. 

Extra lamps are permitted, but no red lights must be visible in front. For bigger vehicles like trucks, buses, and trailers, colored lights for riding must be installed on each corner, positioned no more than ten centimeters from the top.

Another important regulation is that all vehicles must have a way to vary the intensity of their lights. This means that when driving on well-lit streets or encountering oncoming traffic, the driver must be able to dim or tilt the headlights to prevent dazzling other road users. 

These requirements aren’t just bureaucratic red tape; they’re designed to enhance visibility and ensure safety for everyone on the road.

Non-street legal headlights often fall short of these standards. They may be too bright, improperly aligned, or lack the ability to adjust their beam.
