Reflector vs Projector Headlight Housing: How to Tell Which One Your Car Has
Before you buy an LED headlight upgrade, there is one thing worth checking that most people skip: your headlight housing type. It affects how bright your beam looks, how well it focuses on the road, and whether an LED upgrade gives you the result you are expecting.
What reflector housing looks like
Reflector housings are the older, more common design. Look inside your headlight and you will see a bowl-shaped mirror that surrounds the bulb. The mirror bounces light outward and forward. Most older vehicles and many current budget models use this setup. If your headlight lens is smooth and the inside looks like a shiny bowl or cup, you have reflector housing.
What projector housing looks like
Projector housings are more modern. They have a lens at the front, usually round or elliptical, that focuses the light into a tighter, more controlled beam. You will also notice a sharper cutoff line between the lit and unlit area of the road. Many newer sedans, crossovers, and higher trim levels come with projector housing from the factory.

Why this matters before upgrading to LED
LED bulbs emit light differently from halogens. In a reflector housing, some LED bulbs can produce scattered or uneven beams if the light source position does not match the housing design. A correctly specified LED, properly installed, handles this well. In a projector housing, LEDs tend to perform cleanly because the lens already controls the beam shape.
